In my search for a cheap DD and autocross toy I've stumbled across a 2006 Sentra SE-R Spec V in Sunburst yellow.  6 speed 130K miles and has a blown motor for $350.  I feel good about sourcing a new used motor and sticking it in there over the next couple of months.  Any reason this is a bad car for that purpose?  The manifold/cat will certainly go away...

I'm surprised a 2006 has a blown motor. By that year, they had solved most issues. There are a couple of differences between the 2006 models and the years before. The rear discs are larger, the engine management is different and  few other details. It's actually the best year if you plan to go nuts (turbo and all). They aren't that nice to drive but they have a lot of speed potential. Locally, they are the cars to beat in FWD classes in time Attack. They can be made pretty light (2200 lbs)

The problem with these cars is they use vvt to backflow exhaust into the combustion chamber in place of the old fashioned EGR. The issue is that the cat is in the exhaust manifold and when it starts to breakdown those bits get sucked back into the combustion chamber and score the cylinder walls. Plenty of these cars out there for cheap because they are low on compression and burning oil as a result.

In addition to the cat issue, there is an issue where the screws from the butterflies can get ingested via the intake.  In stock form they aren't bad for DD like things, but if you are going to build for serious performance, start from another platform.

I own one with a few buddies.  Its surprisingly good at rallyx.  We've had to do a LOT of work on it, mostly due to the previous owner being a terrible mechanic.  It isn't difficult to work on, but some things are harder than they should be (motor mounts, radiator).

Finding small parts for it can be a pain in the ass.  They are bizzarely expensive  and/or only available from Nissan.

Also RE: the manifold issue.  You can't legally remove that and drive the car (federal law).  Whether or not your state inspects for that is a different story.  There are aftermarket replacements with the cat, so you could replace it every 50k or so.

This is the car in question.  It sounds like 2nd gear is really short for autocross purposes.....true?

2nd is a bit on the short side.  I get into 3rd quite frequently in rallyx.

The rear suspension is goofy and they look ridiculous doing the pissing dog all the time on an autox course.

Thats not a bad buy because if you swap the motor and decide you don't like it, it should sell for 2500+ easily if its clean otherwise.

Mine is great, as long as I add a quart every other tank.

I put the header on as soon as I got it from insurance salvage, but it was too late.  I knew it was trouble when I opened the trunk to several half full 5 liter oil jugs.  Paid $100... Watcha gonna do.
